Chrubuntu certainly has it's place. On my old 2012 Acer 710 Chromebook, there's no other way to dual boot. But if you're going to take the trouble to do hardware upgrades, you should try Gallium linux Check your hardware compatibility here: You might want/need to update the BIOS from Mr.
Chromebox or John Lewis which would allow you to install Windows and theoretically might even allow one to install Mac OS (probably older OS Xes, not High Sierra, although I could be wrong) Most Chromebooks are not upgradeable and leaves the user stuck with something like 16GB- in which case you won't want to dual-boot. For these there is the older ChrUbuntu, which may also be the only option for Chromebooks with ARM CPUs. A Chrome fan who doesn't want linux, or other daring users might also want to look into the Chromium OS project, which has been tweaked and relabeled Cloudready by Jonathan Hefter at Neverware which is free for personal use or also Special Chromium Builds at I should probably write my own article.
But for an operating system hacker, seeing only Chrubuntu mentioned was a bit of a letdown. Basically it relayers GNU software on top of the Chrome kernel (which is almost entirely a linux kernel.) Personally I think Chrome OS should be broken wide open, with Bash and a full-featured terminal provided on every Chrome desktop, not a lame crosh shell in 'developer mode'.
